It's Superbowl season, and I'm sure like me, many of you are just here for the good eats! I love all the savory things. Poppers, burgers, hot dogs, wings... Hot dogs still remain on my top list of favorite foods ever since I was a kid. Although I do not make them in the microwave for snack anymore (I wish that line was never true but alas....) I was super curious if hot dog burnt ends made in the oven could even work. Spoiler alert, they are perfection.
Hold up, what are burnt ends?
Burnt ends refers to slow-cooked, caramelized cubes of meat traditionally made from the tough trimmings of smoked brisket. Burnt ends originally began as a special at BBQ joints after the restaurant had collected the crispy ends of their sliced brisket throughout the week, sauced them up, and served them on bread.
They became such a phenomenon that lots of restaurants started putting burnt ends on the menu. They can be enjoyed on their own or in into side dishes like cornbread and baked beans.
Here's a fun twist on them with hot dogs!
Ingredients
- Hot dogs - My favorite are the A&H brand.
- Mustard
- Liquid smoke - There are different smoke flavors. I like to use the original one.
- BBQ sauce- Any brand or make a homemade batch
- Brown sugar
How to make hot dog burnt ends made in the oven
Preheat oven to 275 degrees F. In an oven safe dish, toss the hot dogs with mustard, liquid smoke and dry rub mixture until evenly coated.
Bake for 1 hour. Remove the hot dogs from the oven and slice into thirds. Top them with brown sugar and BBQ sauce. Raise the temperature of your oven to 350F. Return the hot dogs to the oven for another 20 minutes. Toss the hot dogs 1-2x throughout the process. Raise the temperature again to 400F and bake an additional 10 minutes. Once they are caramelized and browned, remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
Storing
Store leftover burn ends in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Place in a preheated oven for a few minutes to warm through before serving.
