Tu BiShvat marks the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. It's one of the small holidays that often go overlooked, but I always view it as a day of renewed hope in the middle of a cold dark winter. Make the ultimate edible fruit tree craft for Tu BiShvat with the kids to celebrate! They are super easy and only need 3 ingredients!
What ingredients do you need?
- Green baking chocoalte
- Small fruit candies
- Pretzel sticks
How to make the ultimate edible fruit tree craft for Tu BiShvat
Start by melting the chocolate using the double boiler method or in the microwave. I prefer the double boiler method, since you really don't have to babysit it and worry about it burning. Lay a couple pairs of pretzel sticks onto a sheet of parchment paper. When the chocolate is melted, transfer it to a piping bag or a Ziplock bag.
Snip off the edge of the piping bag and pipe a large circle over the pretzel sticks, incorporating the top ¼ of the sticks to secure them. Immediately top with fruit candies. Leave them out to harden or transfer to the fridge for 5-7 minutes to immediately set.
Tip and tricks
I would suggest doing 3-4 trees at a time so that you can add the fruit candies while the chocolate is nice and melty and adheres well.
These treats also make for adorable cupcake toppers!
How to store
- Cool and Dry: Store your chocolate pretzel fruit trees in a cool, dry place. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and keep them away from heat sources to prevent the chocolate from melting.
- Airtight Container: Place the trees in an airtight container to protect them from moisture and humidity. This helps maintain their crunchiness and prevents the chocolate from becoming sticky.
- Layer with Parchment Paper:If you need to stack this festive sweet treat in the container, place sheets of parchment paper between layers. This prevents them from sticking together and preserves their individual decorations.
- Refrigeration (Optional):While not necessary, you can refrigerate your chocolate pretzel trees for extended freshness. However, bring them to room temperature before serving to restore their delightful crunch.
