I'm not so into bread baking because my husband is in the baking industry and I have unlimited access to challahs, sourdough and of course our weekly loaf of rye. My kids love a hearty breakfast and I often make them grilled cheese or toast with a schmear of PB. I know that homemade bread is heavenly, the smell alone is just next level. So I wondered if the kids would enjoy some homemade bread to take their sandwiches to the next level. The dough was super simple to make and the kids call it "Mommy's heaven bread." So I'd say it's worth any effort. Let's make a homemade old fashioned white bread sandwich loaf!
Ingredients:
- Warm water- around 100F
- White sugar
- Active dry yeast
- Oil- I like to use avocado or extra light olive oil
- Salt
- Bread flour- For sandwich bread, bread flour is considered the better choice over all-purpose flour because it has a higher protein content. That results in a chewier bread with better rise and structure.
How to make a homemade old fashioned white bread sandwich loaf:
Dissolve sugar in warm water in a large bowl, and then stir in yeast. Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam, 5 to 10 minutes.
Mix oil and salt into the yeast. Mix in flour one cup at a time. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Place in a well-oiled bowl, and turn dough to coat. Cover with a damp cloth. Allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
Punch the dough down. Knead for a few minutes, Shape into loaf, and place into well-oiled 9x5-inch loaf pan. Allow to rise until dough has topped the pans by one inch, about 30 minutes. Meanwhile. Preheat oven to 350F. Bake the loaves in the preheated oven for 30 minutes until golden brown.
Storing
Store homemade old fashioned white bread sandwich loaf at room temperature in a bread box or wrapped loosely in a paper bag.
To freeze, slice and wrap each slice and freeze for up to 3 months.
