The perfect crockpot applesauce to pair with potato latkes

Okay who's made latkes already? I haven't yet...but I can't wait to!! One of the oldest food pairings I can think of is latkes and applesauce. I never really was fond of applesauce until I had a homemade version. It's so much better then what I thought applesauce could ever be. By cooking the apples in the slow cooker, it's super hands off and it makes your house smell soooo good. Okay let's get to it! Here is the perfect crockpot applesauce to pair with potato latkes!

Ingredients for the perfect crockpot applesauce to pair with potato latkes

    Ingredients:

    • Apples- I use a variety of apples for the perfect balance like Fuji, Pink lady and a touch of Granny Smith.
    • Ground cinnamon- for that perfect pinch of spice
    • Brown sugar- This gives the applesauce a little bit of sweetness when I'm using a mix of sweet and tart apples.
    • Water
    • Lemon peel and lemon juice- this keeps the apples from turning brown and balances their sweetness. I love using a little bit of the lemon peel as well but you can skip that if you don't want to.

How to make the perfect crockpot applesauce to pair with potato latkes:

Add all the ingredients to the crockpot and cook on high for 4 hours. Enjoy as is, or mash with a potato masher for a smoother apple sauce.

    Storing homemade applesauce:

    • Refrigerate: Cool the applesauce, cover it, and store it in the fridge for up to three days.
    • Freeze: Freeze the applesauce for longer storage, up to 10 months. You can place it in plastic containers or Ziplock bags.

    FAQ's on homemade apple sauce:

Do I have to peel the apples?

No, you don’t. But you should know that the peels will make your applesauce more tart and you will need to use a blender or processor rather than simply mashing. Those peels will need more effort than a simple mash.

Can I skip the brown sugar or substitute it?

Yes! Although of course that will change things up. If you want to use a more natural sweetener, try coconut sugar or raw honey.

How else can I enjoy applesauce aside from on a potato latke?

Applesauce is delicious on it's own as a snack. I also really enjoy adding it to my yogurt bowls.
