Rosh Hashanah is the perfect time for all the apple forward desserts to shine! I'm excited to share these apple butter puff pastry twists with you because you have options! Everyone loves options, right? You can use store bought apple butter making these twists literally a 3 ingredient dessert (if you count the confectioners sugar on top) If your feeling fancy, you can make homemade apple butter which is ridiculously easy, and dare I say, really next level taste wise.

Ingredients for apple butter puff pastry twists:
- Apple butter- store bought or homemade (ingredients below)
- Puff pastry roll cut in half or 2 sheets
- Confectioners sugar
- Egg for egg wash
Homemade apple butter ingredients:
- 5 apples- preferably red. You can add 1-2 green apples for a light tartness.
- Brown sugar- or coconut sugar
- Cinnamon
- Vanilla extract
- Water
Directions for the twists:
- Preheat oven to 375F and line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Set them aside.
- Roll out 1 sheet of puff pastry.
- Spread apple butter over half of the pastry sheet.
- Take the side without apple butter and fold it over the apple butter side.
- Using a pizza cutter, cut strips about ¾" thick.
- Twist each end in the opposite direction to create spiral. Place onto the parchment lined baking sheet. Refrigerate for 10 minutes while you roll out the second sheet.
- Brush the twists with egg wash and bake for 20-25 minutes.
- Cool before sprinkling confectioners sugar on top.
- The apple butter puff pastry twists can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.
Directions for homemade apple butter:
- Combine the chopped apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and water in a slow cooker.
- Cook on high for 6 hours.
- Transfer the apples to a blender or food processor fitted with the "S" blade and blend until smooth.
Storing apple butter puff pastry twists:
Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days at room temperature. Note that the confectioners sugar will melt in as they sit, so feel free to sprinkle on fresh confectioners sugar just before serving.
For longer term storage: freeze in an airtight container or freezer safe bag. Place parchment paper between layers. They will loose crispiness in the freezer so you can thaw overnight in the refrigerator, then reheat in a 350°F oven until warmed through and the pastry is crispy again.
