Apple butter puff pastry twists

Spiced apple butter is woven through crispy light layers of puff pastry for an easy and delicious fall themed dessert.

Ingredients
  

Apple butter twists
  • 2 sheets puff pastry
  • c apple butter store bought or homemade (see recipe below)
  • confectioners sugar for sprinkling
Homemade apple butter
  • 5 apples preferably red. Add 1-2 green for a tarter taste.
  • ½ c brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoon water

Method
 

Apple butter twists
  1. Preheat oven to 375F and line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Set them aside.
  2. Roll out 1 sheet of puff pastry.
  3. Spread apple butter over half of the pastry sheet.
  4. Take the side without apple butter and fold it over the apple butter side.
  5. Using a pizza cutter, cut strips about ¾" thick.
  6. Twist each end in the opposite direction to create spiral. Place onto the parchment lined baking sheet. Refrigerate for 10 minutes while you roll out the second sheet.
  7. Brush the twists with egg wash and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  8. Cool before sprinkling confectioners sugar on top.
  9. The apple butter puff pastry twists can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.
Homemade apple butter:
  1. Combine the chopped apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and water in a slow cooker.
  2. Cook on high for 6 hours.
  3. Transfer the apples to a blender or food processor fitted with the "S" blade and blend until smooth.
